As I sat in the waiting room, surrounded by lots of anxious faces, I couldn’t help but feel the emotions.
Each person, including myself, was on their own unique journey, awaiting news that could change everything. Having been through the whirlwind of diagnoses, treatments, and the gruelling wait times myself, I felt a connection to the people around me. It was as if we were all silently sharing our fears and hopes, a silent moment of human connection.
It’s fascinating, yet overwhelming at times, how the emotions of those around us can seep into our own psyche, affecting us in ways we might not even fully realise in the moment.
The science behind it points to our brain’s mirror neurons, which allow us to empathise and even physically mirror the emotions we witness in others. This phenomenon can be a double-edged sword, providing us with the ability to connect deeply but also exposing us to a barrage of emotions that don’t actually belong to us.
In that waiting room, with the palpable tension and unspoken worries, I found myself reflecting on how the emotional states of others were influencing my own, resulting in physical sensations. My heart rate seemed to quicken in response to the collective anxiety, a stark reminder of the powerful connection between our emotional and physical well-being. Luckily I’m aware of how this can happen so I just observed my thoughts and feelings, while recognising the need to protect myself. Fortunately for me (is it the universe sending it to me? who knows) I’m going on a retreat this weekend I’m going to immerse myself in an environment brimming with positivity and peace, a stark contrast to the emotionally charged atmosphere of that waiting room.
This retreat is not just a getaway; it’s a deliberate step towards filling my “positivity bucket” to the brim, a necessary preparation for whatever lies ahead. My decision to jump fully in to the experience – I’ve never been to anything like this on my own before, stems from my understanding that our surroundings and the people we interact with can significantly impact our emotional and physical health. It’s all about the mind body connection, how our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs can impact on us physically. By surrounding myself with positive energy and engaging in activities that foster tranquility and joy, I’m going to boost my physical well-being alongside my mental and emotional health.
The retreat promises a sanctuary where I can engage in mindfulness practices, connect with nature, dip in the sea and simply be in the moment, away from the worries and stresses of everyday life. It’s an opportunity to recharge, to build resilience, and to arm myself with an arsenal of positivity, ready to face the next step on my cancer journey
Reflecting on this has increased my awareness of the incredible power of our environment and social interactions on our overall well-being. It’s a powerful lesson in the importance of consciously choosing where we spend our time and with whom we share our space. After all, our emotional and physical health are intricately linked, each influencing the other in profound ways. This retreat is not just an escape; it’s a strategic move towards healing, resilience, and ultimately, a healthier, more positive outlook for me.
